China Reaffirms Firm Support for Somalia’s Sovereignty, Rejects Secessionism
China has reaffirmed firm support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity after high-level talks, rejecting secessionism and pledging closer diplomatic coordination against separatist agendas.
The People’s Republic of China has reaffirmed its firm and unequivocal support for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, following an urgent high-level diplomatic consultation amid rising regional tensions.
According to an official statement, Chinese Ambassador to Somalia Wang Yu held a telephone discussion with Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdisalam Dhaay, during which Beijing restated its principled position against any actions that threaten Somalia’s internationally recognized borders.
During the call, Ambassador Wang emphasized that China considers the preservation of Somalia’s territorial integrity a core matter governed by international law, reaffirming Beijing’s long-standing policy of respecting state sovereignty and opposing unilateral secessionist moves.
He stressed that China categorically rejects all forms of secessionism, describing such agendas as destabilizing forces that undermine peace, sovereignty, and the global rules-based order. The statement underscored that China does not recognize or support any attempts to legitimize breakaway regions through external political arrangements.
Both sides expressed strong joint opposition to separatist movements, framing secessionism as a threat to the core national interests of both Somalia and China. The language reflected a strategic convergence, drawing parallels between Somalia’s efforts to safeguard national unity and China’s own stance on territorial integrity.

Foreign Minister Abdisalam Dhaay welcomed China’s reaffirmation of support, noting that Beijing’s position—particularly as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council—adds significant diplomatic weight to Somalia’s efforts to defend its unity and independence.
He praised China’s consistent backing of Somalia in international forums and its rejection of policies that seek to fragment sovereign states.
